I've loved this book since I was a child, and now that I have children my appreciation has grown. The story is simple and easy for youngsters to understand, but beautifully conveys the wonder of waking up to freshly fallen snow and having the day to experience it. We read this one in our household over and over, and it never gets old.
Discovering that snow melts if you put it in your pocket for later when you come in the house.This book doesn't attempt to tell a story with problems to solve, villains, or much of a plot. We all remember the joy of a snowy day as a child, before you had to shovel, right.Making footprints in the snow. Making snowmen, snow angels, snowballs. Instead, it just follows Peter through his day exploring his world and being a child. Beautiful, sweet - every library needs this book.
I remember my mom reading this book to me as a child. I still enjoy it just as much as an adult, reading it to my children. Ezra Jack Keats is a favorite author in our house.
So when my grandson picked up the book and started reading to us needless to say we were amazed. I hadn't heard of it but it was really cheap, maybe $2, and he was about one year old then. I brought this book for my grandson from the grocery store. He's three years old now and still loves to read this book. His PaPa would read to him every other weekend when he was over, and he loved it. He loved it so much that he actually memorized the words. I am very happy that I picked up this book in the most unlikely place ever. I would recommend it to all little boys.
In one charming scene, he puts a snowball into his pocket "for later" before entering his warm house, and is disappointed later to find that it is gone.This story really captures a child's wonder at experiencing snow for the first time. The Snowy Day is a simple, elegant story about a little boy's experience with snow. It is very tactile, showing rather than telling the reader about snow's characteristics as the little boy interacts with it visually, manually, and imaginatively. The collage-type art is interesting and unusual, and it makes a very nice addition to your winter reading basket. Probably best for the 2-4 age range, although older children are also able to appreciate it.
